Animals of the Dreaming

During the school holidays we were lucky to have the Zoo Mobile come to our library. Animals of the Dreaming was great. Not only did the kids get to see and touch the different types of animals some of them also got to play the Didgeridoo!

Book Review : A Waltz for Matilda by Jackie French

This book has made me think about what is happening around me and what the world can do without warning. It was a good book and I would recommend it to people probably about 9 years old. (and up)

I would recommend it to people because it gives people ideas of what might suddenly happen and that some people go through awful things.

It was set in 1894 and is based on the song Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Patterson. It is about a girl named Matilda who whilst living in a city and working in a jam factory, her best friend gets badly burnt. Her mother dies and she realises that she must runaway from her grief.

So she flees to the farm her unknown father owns to find he has turned into a swaggie so she travels with him.

They camp by a billabong and then down comes the squatter (Mr Drinkwater) and three of his troopers and accuse him of being a sheep stealer. Her father jumps into the billabong saying, "Catch me if you can!" He then gets his neck caught around some weed and dies. The story goes on with some other sad things.

In the story there are fires, floods, villages and cities but it is really the story of a dependant girl turning into a mature, independant one who figures out that love is not life.

She gets to the age of 17 and becomes engaged. Her fiance sails as a soldier of the Queen in the war British V's Boers. He dies having been shot by the firing squad. Matilda makes friends with his father until he dies and she is left rich. She meets up with a friend she had an argument with over 20 years ago and his little daughter Anna.

They finally become friends again and the story ends roundabout there.

Book Review : Rocks, Minerals and Gemstones by Henry Russel

I've always been fascinated by rocks. The way they glitter and sparkle, but I never took it seriously. Then I borrowed a book from Mittagong Library called "Rocks, Minerals and Gemstones" by Henry Russel. This book helped me to identify what was a black pebble made of. THis book changed the way I saw Rocks. It was very interesting to read how the Earth's different layers create lots of different types of rocks. They are all so beautiful. With this book I found out that my pink rock is Rose Quartz, my lump of heavy glittery stuff is Iron Pyrite, my mind tricking rock is and Eye of a Tiger andmy purple shard is an Amethyst.

This book has me me want to travel the work and collect all the minerals, rocks and gemstones and have a huge colelction of my own. I'd love to be a leading Geologist.

This book has made me think about my future.

Book Review : Billie B Brown and the Secret Message by Sally Rippin

The story "Billie B Brown and the Secret Message" has me thinking of different things.

The first thing is it makes me think of is the beach. The story is set at the beach which makes me think about my life before I moved to Mittagong this year.

I used to go to the beach often with my family and it made me feel happy and relaxed. Like Billie, Harriet and Charlotte. I aslo like to build sandcastles, especially with my sister.

Billie B Brown and the Secret Message also made me think about starting a new school and how worried I was about making new friends.

In the story Billie really wanted to meet the two sisters Harriet and Charlotte but she was scared they wouldn't want to be friends with her.

I learnt from this story that it takes courage to find new friends and keep them. Billie B Brown and the Secret Message made me think that I am very lucky to have met so many new and kind friends at school and I am also lucky to also have my friends at my old school.

Book Review : Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

How fun it would be to be Alice because she is always herself on the inside regardless of how much she changes on the outside. And how determined she is to find the rabbit without letting crazy people and creatures get in her way.
